That Christmas TMI Tuesday meme thing

... which comes from Dirk and Heart in Hand, originating with Just a Jeep Guy (who's blog I don't follow and don't have the link). And yeah, it isn't Tuesday anymore. Deal with it.
THE WAR ON CHRISTMAS 2013
1. Which religion or faith do you belong to, if any? Humph. This one is a blog post in itself. I used to be conservative Christian. Then I caught the gay, in a way, and "we have turned everyone to his own way" as Handel's Messiah is singing me right now. The Church and I have some significant differences now. I still, however, believe in a spiritual deity of sorts, but even I don't really know what I mean by that.
2. What is your opinion of Merry Christmas vs. Happy Holidays? People get their panties in a wad about it and I think the whole mess is stupid.
3. Holiday music on the radio? When and how much? HATE IT!! I hardly listen to the radio at all, and when I do, it's usually NPR classical stuff.
4. When do you start decorating? Do you? Not much. Less and less every year. We hang stockings on the mantle, all of which (or most, depending on who's here at Christmas) are handmade quilted works of art that I've made over the years.
5. White lights or multi-colored?  Whatever.
6. Gift cards, cash, or actually shopped-for presents? This year, not much. I made a nifty fleece scarf for my mom. It has pockets on the ends so she can warm up her hands when wearing it. She loves it. So do I, so much so that I think I'll make one for myself with the leftover material. Not getting anything for anyone outside the family. Amazon gift cards for the kids and some kind of candy/treat for each. (Light, pretend to be surprised.) Superman and I gave each other tickets to the Beer Dinner at our favorite restaurant. Redeemed last week.
7. Christmas cards and/or family update letters are... I used to enjoy sending out cards many years ago before I had kids. Since the kid count got above one I haven't done much. I enjoy receiving thoughtful cards from the few friends who still send them, mostly my gay blog buddies. As for family update letters, they mostly depress me. I've pretended to consider writing one, but it would go something like "We had a very successful 2013! Neither of the younger kids ended up in jail this year." I can't be bothered. I've seen some good ones, though.
8. Snow is...A rarity here in The South (TM)
9. Have you been a good little boy or girl this year? Bah Humbug.
10. RAPID FIRE FAVORITES:
1. Food: Roast turkey, stuffing, gravy... pretty much a repeat of Thanksgiving. And since I was not with the husband and kids this Thanksgiving, I'm definitely going to do Thanksgiving Redux for Christmas dinner, whenever we have it.
2. Dessert: Yes, please. Pumpkin pie is a must. Thanksgiving throwback.
3. Drink: Eggnog with or without some Captain Morgan Spiced. My intestines are getting old, though, and I can't drink very much of that rich eggnog before I'm in the bathroom with regrets.
4. Holiday movie: "It's a Wonderful Life" is a longstanding tradition around here. I like movies that "prove" the existence of Santa. "Miracle on 34th Street," "The Santa Claus," "Polar Express" (which I like for the production value as much as the story)
5. Holiday music: Listening to Handel's "Messiah" right now. Love it! Also like the old traditional carols, even though the religion doesn't move me anymore. I like to listen to the BBC's broadcast of "Nine Lessons and Carols" on Christmas eve, which kinda goes in the next category "traditions." It always begins with a boy choir solo first verse of "Once In Royal David's City." I also really like "Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming."
6. Holiday tradition. Superman having the whole week off. Usually ends up being between 10 and 14 days off in a row. It's difficult when he goes back to work in January. I miss him a lot during the day for the first week he's back.
BONUS(ES) - Christmas sex:
What have you done under the mistletoe? Mistletoe?
Have you caught daddy kissing Santa Clause? Uh, that'd be a No.
Have you done it a Santa suit? Never.
Did you come down the chimney? Um, I think I am the chimney in this metaphor.
Just how merry have you made Santa's helpers? "Santa" really likes me, does that count?

Oh, let's do a meme, since I got nuthin' else

From Cubby who got it from John at Rejected Reality

Sunday 9
This week: Sunshine Day
1. The best known Brady Bunch song is, of course, the show's theme. Do you know the lyrics? Yep
2.The Bradys were a blended family. Do you have stepparents, stepchildren or stepsibs? I have a step mother, two step brothers that I barely know (my dad married her after all their children were grown), an ex-step mother I grew up with, and three ex-step brothers, who I used to know well because I grew up with them, too. Though I haven't seen these ex-steps in many many years. I also have a couple of ex-step nieces/nephews, but I'm not sure that counts.
3. Samantha (I have no idea who Samantha is) admits that, when she was 12, she taped Greg Brady's photo over her bed. Before you judge her too harshly, come clean yourself. Did you have a major pre-teen crush? Who was it? David Cassidy!

4. Which TV character do you wish lived next door? When I was pubescent I wished a cute boy would move next door, but didn't have any desire for a specific TV character or celebrity to be my neighbor. Right now the house next door to ours is for sale. I can't think of any TV character I'd want as a neighbor, though all the TV characters I know of, past or present, I would NOT want to live next door. Not even the Partridge Family.
5. It's a sunshine day! Describe your sunglasses. Old-lady-style big plastic, polarized, dark amber lenses, black frames.
6. You're on a 90-minute flight. How will you spend the time? Do you read a book? A magazine? Look out the window? Take a nap? Last time I was on an airplane was before 9/11/01. For 90 minutes I'd probably look out the window, assuming I had a window seat. Otherwise I'd probably read from my Kindle. I have 148 unread items on my Kindle right now, according to the home screen.
7. Do you have a favorite brand of toothpaste? Whatever's cheap.
8. How many keys are on your key ring? Which one? I have one exclusively for my truck keys, one for the lockable doors inside the house, and one for the outside doors and other miscellany. I don't know how many keys I have. I also collect keys (though I can't remember where I put the collection after the last time I "cleaned"). I have lots. I'd count them, except I can't find them.
9. What do you miss about summertime? Not much. The availability of fresh peaches, maybe? But I don't like peaches all that well. What I don't miss about summer is a long list, including but not limited to the kids being home all the time on summer vacation, the oppressive heat, tepid water coming from the "cold" water tap, the seasonal advertisements, the smell of insect repellent and sun screen, paying so much for the power to run my air conditioner, bugs, and did I mention the oppressive heat?

TMI Thursday

A weekly meme originally (as far as I know) from Just a Jeep Guy  and copied directly from Cubby at Patently Queer
WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL BETTER WHEN…
…you are sick with the flu? Medicine with sleep inducing ingredients. It's been a while since I had the flu. It's miserable. My hair hurts and I ache all over. When I have the flu I drink lots of Gatorade and sleep as much as possible. Does it make me feel better? I dunno. Getting over the flu is the only thing that makes me feel better.
…you are in a bad mood? Um, sleep? Yeah, I tend to hide from discomfort by sleeping. Griping also helps. That, or it nurtures the bad mood and that's just how I react. I don't usually stay in a bad mood very long, anyway.
…you are alone? HA! Being alone makes me feel better. #Introvert
…you are sad? Pictures of cats on the internet. Conversations (email and chat, mostly) with caring friends I've met through my blogging activities.
…you are mad? Time. These counselor types keep trying to get me to use better coping skills to deal with being mad. Sometimes I feel better if I express my anger right here on my blog. The exercise of collecting my thoughts to clearly express why I'm angry can help calm me down. And I usually don't stay mad for very long anyway.
…you are frustrated? A good scream can do wonders. Distracting myself with, for instance, pictures of cute or funny cats on the internet (see above) also helps. .
…you are angry? What's the difference between being mad and being angry? Unless "mad" means I've gone insane. In which case, refer to the ...you are mad? answer above for this question. Which means I need an answer to what makes me feel better when I am mad if mad = insane. Drugs. Psychotropic drugs prescribed by a competent psychiatrist. I have also had some success with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) when I can take it seriously and not roll my eyes at how contrived it is. Sometimes my brain gets in the way of real help.
Bonus Question
…you are horny? Sex, of course, either with myself or preferably with my Superman.

The 'Spo Meme

Oh thank goodness. Ur-Spo has, after encouraging me to write a new post already, provided us with a meme so we don't have to come up with another idea for a blog post.

______________ is jolly good fun!  (driving a truck)
Tea, wine, or champagne? Champagne, the not very expensive stuff, on the sweet side. Not Brut.
How left handed are you? Predominately right handed, but can accomplish a lot with the left hand.
The loudest item of clothing I have is that red skirt I found at the Goodwill store in Indiana, PA. I've only worn it once. I don't "do" loud clothes.
The Best Friend: who is s/he? If we're not counting the husband as best friend (which he pretty much is), my best friend is probably C, the 24 year old gay fella we took in six years ago when his mom kicked him out for being gay.
I’d rather eat rats in Tewkesbury than attend a pep rally for a high school sports team.
How many of these have you done?:
1. Been to an opera nope
2. Read a novel by Dickens Yes, I've read a few, but the only one I liked was "A Christmas Carol."
3. Drank Bourbon not that I remember
4. Been to Key West Yes: when I was 4 years old my grandparents took me. I barely remember it, save for my grandmama going swimming in the motel pool and my grandpapa not letting me get within four feet of the edge of the pool for fear I'd fall in and drown. He was a worrier that way.
5. Visited The Stratford Festival of Canada nope. I've never visited any of Canada, though I'd sure like to. Considering putting "go to a Tim Horton's in Canada" on my bucket list.
6. Spiders give you the heebie-jeebies. Not really. If it is rapidly approaching me and hairy and bigger than an Eisenhower silver dollar, then yes.
7. Been to Michigan nope
8. Rolled down a grass hill. Oh YES! Over and over again. Short ones and long ones. One of the defining experiences of my childhood.
9. Ate Synder Pretzels Butter Snaps. Go. Eat. Be merry. (That would be a "yes.")
10. Used the word ‘rubbish” in the past 30 days. I don't think so, but I will try to if you really want me to.
11. Worn a bow tie nope
12. Have a set of Viking horns Being something of a hoarder, I have many interesting and somewhat unique things. A set of Viking horns, however, is not among my collection. I guess the closest thing I have to Viking horns is a silver-colored metallic hardhat with my maternal grandmother's name  affixed via Dymo lable maker tag circa 1980. Do you remember those old label makers? They looked something like this:
The tag is brown but does not say "ETSY" because that's not my grandmother's name.

A meme!

Because it's time for something light and cheerful-ish.

  • When showering, do you start the water and then get in, or get in then start the water? I turn on the hot water in the sink, let it run until it's hot. After turning off the sink faucet I start the hot water in the shower, usually while standing at the edge of the shower.
  • Do you read the labels on your shampoo bottle? Depends on how bored I am while taking a shower.
  • Do you moan in the shower like the people on the Herbal Essences commercial? Not hardly.
  • Have you ever showered with someone of the opposite sex? Yep.
  • Have you ever been forced to shower with one of your siblings? When we were very young we took baths together, but I don't remember it. There's pictorial evidence.
  • Have you ever brushed your teeth in the shower? Yeah, maybe once or twice, but I don't make a habit of it.
  • Have you ever dropped your soap on your foot? I have dropped many things on my foot.
  • How old do you look? I have no idea.
  • How old do you act? Sometimes older than my years, and sometimes younger than I should.
  • What’s the last song you sang? Fireflies by Owl City, thanks to Tigeryogiji. (I got this meme from his blog, too. )
  • Have you recently become a member of anything? The Adam & Eve mailing list
  • What are your plans for the weekend? Spend all of Saturday alone! Superman and Sproing are going out of town for the day. Also, I'll study and maybe start the papers that are due in the next couple of weeks.
  • Do you kiss with your eyes open or closed? I'm too busy kissing to pay attention.
  • Whats the sexiest thing about Condoleeza Rice? I think she's kinda pretty, actually.
  • Does anything on your body itch right now? No
  • Who’s the sexiest famous woman alive? Can't think of anyone specific off hand. There are many.
  • Who’s the sexiest famous man alive? Maybe Hugh Jackman, but there are other contenders.
  • Does every family have a crazy uncle? Does "crazy" necessarily mean "gay?" My kids have a crazy uncle, but he's ever-so-straight. Gay friendly, definitely an advocate, but a Kinsey 1 if I'd have to guess.
  • Have you ever smuggled something into America? That'd be a no.
  • Does playing the guitar make a girl/guy more attractive? It depends on the person and the circumstances, but it has the potential to up the sexy rating.
  • Do you live in a city with a good sports team? HA! I assume this means at the professional level. The Lander University Women's Basketball team did very well, got into the finals or something. Otherwise, we got nuthin'.
  • Have you ever finished off the popcorn and eaten the junk from the bottom of the bag? Like the partially popped kernels? Yeah, occasionally.
  • Have you ever had sex in a tent? Yes. Many times, actually.
  • What about in a boat? No
  • Have you ever dated a Goth? No. Goths didn't exist as a subculture when I was dating, at least not to my knowledge.
  • Can you fix your own car? What do you mean by "fix" exactly? I've changed the oil in my truck before. I have a very good working relationship with my mechanic.
  • Should guys wear pink? Absolutely. Dark skin looks especially good clothed in pink, IMHO. The guy I dated in high school often wore a pink Izod Lacoste polo shirt that I loved. He looked so good wearing it!

    A Meme

    Stolen from Ur-Spo

    1. What is your current obsession?

    I'm too tired for obsessions.

    2. What do you see outside your window?

I can’t see out the window because it’s too dirty. I get a hint of green tree canopy, though.

    3. If you could have any super power what would it be?

    Transmogrification

    (click to embiggen)

    4. What is your favorite color?

I like all colors. My least favorite is red, though there are many applications in which red is the perfect color. I am not fond of wearing red clothes.

    5. Who was the last person you hugged?

That would be Sproing, who jumped on me before I got out of bed this morning.

    6. Which animal would you be?

Depending on the circumstances, probably a chicken

    7. What’s for dinner?

Twitch is fixing chili. This will be interesting.

    8. What’s the last thing you bought?

I spent money for Diva and Sproing to get an ice cream treat during the school’s field day on Friday. Does that count? I don’t remember the last thing I bought for myself.

    9. What are you listening to right now?

    The hum of the refrigerator

    10. What are your current favorite films?

    “Enchanted” “Noises Off”

Dust. Under that, I’m not sure. Lots of miscellaneous papers and books and CDs and I don't know what else.

    12. If you could have a house totally paid for, and fully furnished, anywhere in the world, where would it be?

    The Appalachian Mountains

    13. What would you like to have in your hands right now?

A bowl of chocolate ice cream with malted milk powder stirred into it

    14. What is your favorite children’s book?

    Fox in Socks

    16. What is your favorite article of clothing?

An old wrap-around apron, soft and worn

    17. If you could go anywhere in the world for the next hour, where would you go?

    Q & A

It's a meme! Indigo tagged me, but since I've given up passing on tags, I shan't tag anyone else. Feel free to use it, though.

    1. Were you named after anyone? Either my mother's mother or my mother's sister. Since my grandmother and my aunt have the same name, I guess it doesn't matter who exactly I was named after. And I don't like the name. It is very old fashioned and boring.

    2. When was the last time you cried? Friday, when I was overwhelmed by the difficulty of dealing with Sproing.

    3. Do you like your handwriting? Mostly, and especially when I slow down and make an effort to write neatly. My mother has the most gorgeous handwriting! It looks just like the writing in the little books they made us copy from in school.

    4. What is your favorite lunch meat? Thinly sliced deli roast beef. (Alright, I'm hungry now)

    5. Do you have kids? Do you read this blog? Yes. Four or six, depending on how you count. Four that I am legally responsible for.

    6. If you were another person, would you be friends with you? I don't know. Maybe. On some days.

    7. Do you use sarcasm? More often than I should.

    8. Do you still have your tonsils? Nope

    9. Would you bungee jump? Um, no.

    10. What is your favorite cereal? By cereal, do you mean packaged breakfast cereal? Or do you mean cereal grain? The position of "favorite" in packaged breakfast cereals changes. It depends on what kind of mood my taste buds are in. As for cereal grains, it's a toss up between oats and barley. Is barley a cereal grain? For the sake of this meme, let's assume so.

    11. Do you untie your shoes when you take them off? I don't actually have any shoes with laces, so no.

    12. Yellow light: speed up or slow down? It depends on a lot of factors, including but not limited to my current level of PMS.

    13. What is your favorite ice cream? It's hard to say. Chocolate is always a good basic, but it often depends on what's available. I really like to get two Ben and Jerry's flavors, Chunky Monkey and Chocolate Fudge Brownie, remove the ice cream from the cartons and cut them in half from top to bottom. Then I put half of each flavor back into the cartons. It is a wonderful mix of flavors and I like catching both on my spoon.

    14. What is the first thing you notice about people? I have no idea. I don't pay attention to exactly what I'm paying attention to. That sounds funny. I'm too busy noticing things that I'm not aware of what I'm noticing? I'm not into meta-attention, how 'bout that?

    15. Red or pink?  In what context? I'm not overly fond of either color generally, but in the right application both can be the perfect color.

    16. What is your least favorite thing about yourself? That's a tough question to pose to someone with as many self-esteem issues as I have. I can't prioritize the list on such short notice.

    17. Who do you miss the most? Probably my paternal grandmother. She was a wonderful old gal.

    18. Do you want everyone to complete this list? Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.

    19. What color pants and shoes are you wearing? Pants - gray knit shorts. Shoes - none.

    20. What are you listening to right now? The noise coming from the living room. Superman and Twitch are checking out random YouTube videos of old songs and old cartoons. I don't have any music or TV or anything on. For the last hour I've been considering putting in my ear plugs so I can't hear that noise out there.

    21. If you were a crayon, what color would you be? What the heck do I know? Where do these questions come from?

    22. Favorite smells? Now that you mention it, a fresh new box of Crayola crayons is right up there. Fresh baked bread is another good one.

    23. Who was the last person you talked to on the phone? I don't remember. I talked to my mother on Thursday. It was her birthday. I think the most recent was one of Sproing's friends who called wanting to talk to him.

    24. Do you like the person who sent you this? Very much

    25. What is your favorite sport to watch? Major league baseball, specifically the Atlanta Braves.

    26. Hair color? Brownish, I guess, with a touch of gray just starting to sprout

    27. Eye color? Gray/green

    28. Do you wear contacts? Sometimes. I don't have any currently and need to have another eye exam before I can get some more.

    29. Favorite food? Chocolate ice cream, chocolate candy, chocolate in general

    30. Scary movie or happy ending? Happy ending, definitely!

    31. Last movie you watched? Into the Wild. Good movie, very thought provoking.

    32. What color shirt are you wearing? I don't know, it's one of those not white, not brown colors. Dull, earth tone.

    33. Summer or winter? Winter, especially around here. Summers are way too hot.

    34. Hugs or kisses? It depends entirely on the person and the situation.

    35. Most likely to respond? I have no earthly idea.

    36. Least likely to respond? My lurkers. (you know who you are!)

    37. What book are you reading now? Textbooks, baby, lots of textbooks. I began Sex as God Intended by John J. McNeill during spring break, but didn't finish it then and don't have time to read it before final exams. I'll pick it back up after the semester is over.

    38. What is on your mousepad? No mousepad. I use a laptop with touch pad.

    39. What did you watch on TV last night? I didn't watch TV last night.

    40. Favorite sounds? The sound of silence goes a long way. Soft, cheerful sounds of nature. Rain on a metal roof.

    41. Rolling Stones or Beatles? Simon and Garfunkel

    42. What is the farthest you've been from home? Pasadena, California. I flew out there to visit a dear friend of mine way back in 1986, I think it was. September. Had a wonderful time.

    43. Do you have a special talent? That depends on how you define talent. I can do many things, but I am not sure if any of them could be defined as a special talent.

    44. Where were you born? Daytona Beach, Florida

    45. Whose answers are you looking forward to getting back? I have no expectations.

    46. How did you meet your spouse/significant other? A blind date set up by his sister.

    Scrooge Meme

This meme brought to you thanks to Ur-Spo. Feel free to use it as you will.

Have you actually read the book “A Christmas Carol” ?

    Indeed I have.

Do you have any relatives you would rather not see (but have to)this Christmas?

We're staying home this year and no family is coming to visit, so besides those of us living in this house I won't see any other family. I am happy to see my husband and children. There are a couple of uncles and a whole slew of in-laws I would like to avoid, and am doing so pretty successfully.

Do you have a cloying employee who is asking for something this Christmas, like more time off?

Not having any employees, no I don't. However, I have children, which is in some ways similar. So far none of them is asking anything unreasonable.

Have you ever been visited by a Spirit?

Not in the same sense as Scrooge in this story, no.

Who is the biggest “Scrooge” in your family?

    Me, most likely.

Have you ever eaten Roast Goose?

No. Roast duck, yes, but not roast goose.

How about a flaming plum pudding?

No, but it sounds like great fun, doesn't it?

What is your favorite memory of a Christmas Past?

The night before, being so excited I couldn't sleep, and listening to my grandfather snore. I would almost always get up in the night and sneak into the living room to peek.  The "Santa" at our house always left each child's major gift unwrapped and set up in front of the tree. I remember the night I saw my first big bicycle. It was blue with chrome fenders. So cool! Grandpapa was sleeping on the sofa in the living room and scared the beJebus out of me when he let loose with a mighty snore. To this day I don't know if it was a natural snore or if he saw me there and snorted on purpose to frighten me. Either scenario is possible.

What is “Bah Humbug” about Christmas this year?

I'm just not in the Christmas mood, but feel as though I must pretend for the sake of the children.

Which version of “A Christmas Carol” is your favorite?

The Muppet Christmas Carol, an absolutely genius retelling of the tale.

Tiny Tim - sweet or obnoxious?

Mostly sweet, and occasionally too sweet veering toward obnoxious. But more sweet than not.
