Know thine enemy

I'm trying not to get political on the blog here, mainly because it is not an area in which I feel very comfortable. However, today I got an email from a very conservative "Christian" friend. The other day she sent me an email, something about how wonderful Sarah Palin is. I have resisted responding to anything she sends me in hopes of discouranging her from sending that crap. But that one pushed me too far so I replied. I simply said that Palin scares me and I am not going to vote for the McCain/Palin ticket.

My inbox this morning contained the following.
I heard what you said about Palin, and you maybe right but any vote that is not for them is a vote for Obama.  And a vote for Obama is a vote for the Anti-Christ to be ushered in.  Just the thought of that scares me because I know what the word of God says concerning what will happen when he does.  And if I can vote against it, and pray that God has Mercy on us for 4 more years I will. I will agree that Im not sure McCain and Palin are the best choice as it is made to appear.  But I do fear what the other choice represents.
I pray that God leads you in your choice for this presidency.
In His Love

Yes, dear, I will be voting for Obama. Besides which, Treasury Secretary Paulson is the Antichirst. Have you not recognized him?

No, I'm not going to reply to this email. At this point there is nothing either of us can say to the other that will be effective. Otherwise I'm invoking Thumper's rule.*

I love that you are invoking Thumper in your political philosophy. Would that more would do so! I really appreciate a good—even heated—discussion, but the screeching online these days makes for short reading for me. And any end-times rhetoric just makes me wish for their rapturous disappearance.

I swear, the further I get from my church upbringing, the better off I am. The antichrist? Oh for god's sake. What sort of fear mongering is that chick listening to? You have to be kidding. The man goes to a Christian church...does that count for anything? And that Palin...she's nothing but a zero. Substance = absolutely nothing.

I'm not sure which values of Christ's message Palin actually follows. She certainly doesn't love her neighbor nearly as much as herself. She spreads hate and fear wherever she goes. She's as scary as Dick Cheney.

I was taught that Satan was the Prince of Lies, so should we just start calling Sarah "Princess"?

Why does this person think that Obama is the Anti-Christ?

I guess I missed that part of the Bible. I was too busy reading about loving thy neighbor as thyself.

It amazes me how so much hatred can spew out of people who believe in a loving God.

Your link is no longer active, but I think you mean this bit.

I would absolutely respond to that e-mail.

Dear Blank:

I hope you will respect my right to believe that you are absolutely without a doubt batshit crazy while I respect your GAWD-given right to be so. May God grant you sanity and literacy so that you can read "his word" for yourself instead of just agreeing to whatever Pastor says. And may God have mercy on America if we choose a lying condescending racist homophobe pig to lead us.

In His Common Sense,
Signed

And then block that address.

I'm all for what the Hobbit wrote! Too funny. Oh yes, the good ole' South! I remember it well. I have a friend down there who keeps emailing me pro-McCain crap that I automatically delete without even looking at. You just can't change minds that are set in concrete.

my coworker had to tell my boss why so often lately when he walks in the office, it suddenly goes silent. he was thinking we were talking about him behind his back all the time, when in fact, we discuss mccain/palin and how stupid they are as SOON as he leaves (since he is a staunch republican who refuses to see the REAL writing on the wall). as soon as we hear him come back in (bell on the door), we all immediately stop talking.

I made it clear to my family years ago that I did not want them to send me emails containing any of that crap. They caught on when I hit reply all and said somethings they didn't want to hear and could no longer ignore because I'd said it to everyone. I've never gotten emails from the again.

Thumper's Rule! I LOVE that...so you should call this person with the stinky politics Flower if you want to...

Man, that way of thinking (or not, like sheep) just scares the willies out of me.

Well, thanks, Jav, you can just ROCK me to sleep now...

If someone really invokes the word "antichrist", I tend to laugh. It's like a badge that says, "Hi, I'm mentally ill."

It would be interesting from a clinical perspective what reasoning your "friend" used to arrive at his conclusion. Perhaps reasoning should be in quotes, too.

I don't have a problem with Christianity per se, but for whatever reason, the second it touches on secular politics, the wheels come off rational argument. Say that you don't like a ticket's tax plan, or their position on foreign relations. Vote against them because you think they might marginalize one group in society or another. Rail against them because you dislike their approach to campaigning, or because they support some obscure piece of legislation that you'd like to see overturned.

But "the anti-Christ"? Is that really the best and most well-informed argument you can come up with? Should you even be allowed to vote?

The founding fathers were absolutely brilliant in their assertion that religion has absolutely no place in democratic (the principle, not the party) politics.

I agree with you not responding to her. People that are that swept away with the "fear" cant be persuaded. Not worth you fingers to type it out for her.

You inspired me to post a rebuttal to the Religious Reich on my blog too.

I too join the chorus of anger that my choice of candidate label him and me as evil/not american etc.
it reminds me of Germany in the 30s.

Jewel of a post, Java dear. All "evidence" of what lurks inside the heads of these fearful, willingly ignorant medievalists is valuable to the body public. Many in my family pen me emails just like this.

This election has helped me get a gut check about where many of our fellow citizens reside inside their minds. It IS scary as hell, and amusing too, as they all seem to think WE are the ones destined for that fiery place simply for our ballot choice (where did Jesus talk about voting?)

Me thinks they are in for a big surprise when the roll is called up yonder and God tells the fools: "Why didn't you get your heads out of your assholes"?

Just wanted to say Hi, haven't dropped in awhile. I'm sorry that you are feeling down, I get this way too about this time of the year (all the hate)

But something you might consider, with your friend, say, "Shouldn't we be welcoming the Anti-Christ, for the means Rapture is soon at hand?"

:D

I love what Stephen Rader wrote! And I must agree with what so many have said. It's not worth you time to respond.

It really irks me to see so many people who say they are Christian behave that way. It makes me feel kind of ashamed to call myself by the same name as them (Christian). I just hope that they eventually see how the world really is.
