Evil is like a shadow - it has no real substance of its own, it is simply a lack of light. You cannot cause a shadow to disappear by trying to fight it, stamp on it, by railing against it, or any other form of emotional or physical resistance. In order to cause a shadow to disappear, you must shine light on it. -Shakti Gawain, teacher and author (b. 1948)

I like the description that it has no real substance of its own.
That is a nice quote. thanks for sharing
in a 12 step program you will constantly hear acronyms. there is one about fear- it is Fuck Everything And Run....
somehow this came to mind....
So I should surround myself with bright people, then?
I dunno... I've seen evil as a tangible force.
I think sometimes ignorance is mistaken for evil. Like indigo said, I've seen evil take a very real form in human cruelty (historic and current). But so often I see people who act out of ignorance, and violence is the last resort of the ignorant because they don't know what else to do. They act out of fear. The light we can cast is knowledge; and knowledge dispensed with forgiveness, mercy and love can illuminate the darkest corners.
Beautiful quote. Sadly, it immediately made me think of Dick Cheney - evil hiding in shadows, away from the light of truth..... Can't wait till they're gone so my mind can be filled with better things.
Right... The trouble is that the true monsters in this world look just like people.
Wonderful quote!
Some people are a source of darkness, that destroy other's light.
Thanks for the sweet comment L, and yes - he is hot! (Blows me away every day! ;-o)
I love this! And it's just what I needed to hear!
Thanks for this, it is beautiful. Someone I read occasionally speaks of creating pockets of light within the darkness of our culture. This sounds like the same thing.
