Giraffes are my favorite wild animal, elephants being a close second. I'm also
rather fond of the large land tortoises.Sometimes I think I'm too sensitive for my own good. When my friends grieve, I grieve.
We've had a couple of days of rain. The rest of the Fay system seems to be slowly passing over us. The rain is good, we desperately need it. Humidity is high, the days are damp and heavy. It feels very tropical. Temperatures are a good 10 degrees lower than they have been, with highs in the mid 80s and little or no sun. Except for the humidity, it would be almost comfortable.
But my indicator tells me summer is not over. The water coming from the cold water tap is still tepid, not cold. This is yet another thing I don't like about The South.
No, I still haven't applied to Lander U. for spring semester.

This evening I watched The Women for the first time. I can certainly understand why it is a gay classic! If ever you want a lesson on how to be a catty bitch, this movie will show you how.
Superman has another case of shingles. By that I don't mean he has a box of roofing material. Have
I mentioned his shingles episodes before? The poor dear has been suffering shingles outbreaks for years now, usually when he is under stress and over tired. This time it is manifesting as pain along his right side from just above the knee to the armpit. It hurts to touch it. It hurts to not touch, it, too. He saw the doctor today and got a prescription for Valtrex. He gets so tired when he has a shingles episode. I think the pain wears him out.I had another chance to feel old today. I was waiting at the pharmacy for a prescription to be filled. As I sat in their uncomfortable chair a fairly sexy bear came in to pick up his meds. He wore baggy cargo shorts and an unremarkable t-shirt. He didn't seem particularly tall, but wasn't short. He was packing a few extra pounds, not much, enough to make him snuggly. He had a scruffy beard that looked like the work of maybe 3 weeks growth, and it was shaped to cover much of his face. He had a small tat in the center of his left calf. I thought he might be in his early to mid 30s. When the pharmacy cashier pulled his meds, she asked him for his birthdate. He answered (number/number)1980.
1980 is the year I graduated high school. 1980 was two years before I met Superman. 1980 was 28 years ago, which seems like a long time. But in 1980 I was 18 years old, certainly old enough to procreate. This young man standing at the pharmacy counter was young enough to be my son. He looked way too old to be my son!
Yesterday would have been my Grandmama's 102nd birthday. She has been dead for about 11 or 12 years now. I miss the old girl.
That is all. Thank you.

my dad gets bouts of shingles. his most frequently shows up on the left side of his chest, on the ribs under where the arm usually sits.
you're a spring chicken! two years younger than me :D
in my neck of the woods, the water never really gets hot hot, or stays that way for long. comes with the territory of relying on catchment for my water supply and having an "on-demand" hot water heater.
i have never seen the women. personally, i have met more than my share of catty bitches and try to stay the hell away. my idea of an "old classic" is indiana jones. action, adventure, and very little cattiness. woo hoo!
i have been getting hints that summer is waning lately here; the smell of the air on a weekend day out on the water (there is something about the smell of "fall", even in tropical places). it's getting darker earlier. sometimes i even get to throw on a sweatshirt when i walk the dog early mornings or late evenings.
indigo incarnates
Wow! you graduated two years before I became incarnate.
Shingles are dreadful. I think Richard Nixon used to get those too. I hope Superman feels better!
Alos hope that Superman gets better and fast. I had an uncle who dealt with that also.
I enjoy so much reading about your thoughts all the time! Thanks for your blogging...
I have not seen that movie "The Woman" but I did see the new ad for it during previews yesterday for the udated one. I will have to go watch it.
Have a good day!
Your frightening/lightning question sounds like me questioning the spelling of attorneys/journeys. ;-)
I need to get my "gay card" checked....I've never hjeard of "The Women." Now you have me wunderin'.
1980 WAS a long time ago! (ducking now) I was in 6th grade. You're actually my oldest brother's age, so there really isn't much of an age difference between you and me. :-)
You're not too sensitive for your own good. You grieve when your friends grieve because you have empathy.
I came across this interesting tidbit about giraffes a while back in Wikipedia...
"Another function of necking [apart from the 'necking duels' fought to establish access to estrous females] is affectionate and sexual, in which two males will caress and court each other, leading up to mounting and climax. Same sex relations are more frequent than heterosexual behavior. In one area 94% of mounting incidents were of a homosexual nature. The proportion of same sex courtships varies between 30 and 75%, and at any given time one in twenty males will be engaged in affectionate necking behavior with another male."
I always wondered about those eyelashes.
I love "the Women" I think it is a great film. Did you see that they are making an updated remake that I think comes out in the next two weeks. I am not going to bother. Why mess with an original!
1980? Same as me! I didn't know that anyone was as old as me! As for the shingles, my mother in law had them for about a year before they went away...tried every drug on the market...drove her crazy! As for giraffes, did I ever tell you that I actually fed one a pellet of his food straight out of my own mouth? Their tongues are about a foot long and slimy!!! Ick. That was in Kenya in 1993.
love "the women"
our new one piece lace foundation garment- zips up the back with no bones...
i was just looking at giraffes last friday. i love them too. they are so cartoon-like.
I saw that another hurricane, Gustav, was headed towards the gulf coast. Here's to hoping it dissipates quickly once inland,
I often think I am too sensitive as it is worse for a guy, I wonder if it is because I'm gay as my straight male friends don't seemed to be so easily moved over things.
Well to me it feels like we just got over the Y2K scare and to think it will soon be nine years ago! Where does the time go!
My Dad had shingles and it took him a while to get rid of it.
Giraffe, a very cool animal, I was able to touch one when I was a kid. We went to a zoo for a school trip and one bent her head down to see if we had treats, she certainly was not afraid to let me touch her and she moved as if she was in slow motion. (@ Joe) Who knew they were bi! ;)
As the oldest blogger I know, I want all of you to quit whining about your age! I cannot tell you how many times I have said, "Yes, I'm old enough to be your mother" to colleagues, therapists, doctors and good friends. Age is immaterial to mindset except for the experience it brings. As far as I'm concerned, I'm forever 22. And I still enjoy the eye candy.
Honey, don't you bottle up those emotions. We need to be open with ourselves and each other. You are the example we all need.
Oh, not so old at all, dear--I graduated only three years later than you...in fact, had few friends younger than you and your classmates at the time! Age always seems like an arbitrary number to me. Attitude is the secret.
And not too sensitive, either. It has been a comfort to know that you were grieving while I was (please note the past tense, which has almost entirely taken effect). Our sense of autumn is premature, I believe.
Haven't seen The Women yet myself. Aren't there enough catty bitches in teh world without spending my time watching more on TV?
Don't you just love that Joe?!
It's funny, I just posted today about the fact that they are putting out a remake of The Women and that I doubt it will be able to stack up against the original. And you know their going to tone the whole thing down.
I hope Superman is better soon. I have only had shingles once and that was more than enough.
Don't even get me going on the old thing. My daughter was 6 in 1980.
You and Tony are both into the Women today...that surprises even me. I am going to rent that movie and watch it too.
I like your random entries! Fay made its' way up here. It's been cool and gray all day.
My Grandfather used to get shingles - it was horrid. Hope it clears up quickly!
My name is Laura Clos and i would like to show you my personal experience with Valtrex.
I am 29 years old. Have been on Valtrex for 12 months now. Just wanted to get the word out there that there are some kind of weird and scary side effects that might make it not worth taking the drug.
I have experienced some of these side effects -
I have had a few really vivid nightmares once in a while since I started taking this medication. The reason I'm posting this is that I had one last night & I can't even explain how real it felt. I forced myself with all of my strength to wake up & once I did I felt completely disoriented, lightheaded, and confused. I was terrified to go back to sleep. Some hair loss as well. Some depression and mental fogginess. And some increase in IBS symptoms. Really though the occasional extremely intense nightmare is the worst side effect.
I hope this information will be useful to others,
Laura Clos
